Location Choice and Commuting Behavior in Cities with Decentralized Employment*

چکیده

This paper explores residential and job location patterns and commuting behavior in a monocentric urban model with decentralized employment. We show that, in some cases, identical households choose different residential rings depending on their workers’ job locations. This means that high-income households whose workers work near the central business district (CBD) may choose residential locations near the CBD rather than in the suburbs if their workers have CBD job locations. In this case there will be a nonmonotonic relationship in the city between income level and residential distance from the CBD. Identical workers also are shown to choose different residential locations depending on their job locations. Wage gradients for workers as a function of job location are derived. The model also suggests that the skill composition of a firm’s workforce affects its incentive to move to the suburbs. Implications of the model for commuting patterns are explored.

Distance and Labor Force Participation: Implications for Urban and Rural Women

Six explanations for differences in worktrips between men and women and among different groups of women workers are reviewed in this paper. The first argues that women’s secondary role in the labor force and the dual roles women assume (combining paid work with domestic responsibilities) reinforce their resistance to long worktrips. The second explanation is that women’s economic returns to com...

STANFORD CENTER FOR INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT Working Paper No . 327 Schools and Location : Tiebout , Alonso , and Government Policy by Eric

An important element in considering school finance policies is that households are not passive. Instead they respond to policies with a combination of modified residential choice and political choice of tax levels. The highly stylized decision models of most existing analyses, however, lead to concerns about the policy evaluations. In our general equilibrium model of residential location and co...
